A Hindu priest, Jogeswar Roy (also known as Jogeswar Dasadhikari), (50), of the Sri Sri Shanto  Gaurio Mot (Hindu temple-cum-school) of Shonapota village under Debiganj Upazilla of Panchagarh District, Bangladesh, was hacked to death with a chapati (machete) on February 21 early morning.

When the priest was preparing to lead the morning prayer in the temple, some assailants came and pelted stones on the roof of the temple. Hearing the noise, Jogeswar came out of the temple and  realizing the impending danger, he began to run away. He was caught on his track and slaughtered there. Gopal Chandra Roy, one of the devotees, rushed to the aid of the injured priest but he was wounded with a bullet. Three assailants hurled a crude homemade bomb to scare people around and fled the scene on a motorcycle.

Unmarried Jogeswar Roy had established the temple in 1998 selling his lands and other properties.

The Islamic State (IS) later in the day claimed responsibility of the murderous attack on the Hindu priest.

Three persons, belonging to a banned Islamist group, have been arrested so far.

Old Bangla (Bengali) Prose

The Bengali-language book, Purono Bangla Goddo, by Professor Anisuzzaman has been published by the Mowla Brothers, Dhaka. It provides the development and examples of old Bengali prose. Lovers of Bengali language and literature would find it both handy and useful.

The writer of the book says: "The history of Bangla prose is generally described from the beginning of the nineteenth century. But most scholars agree that some examples of Bangla prose can be found from the sixteenth century. They say that prose from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century is scattered and limited to records and documents. The development of Bangla prose, on account of continuity and essence, is noticed from the nineteenth century."

Exactly after 962 years, leaders of both the separated Churches -- Roman Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church -- met and embraced each other in Cuba's Havana airport lounge on February 12.

Pope Francis, leader of the 1-billion-member Roman Catholic Church, and Patriarch Kirill, leader of the world's 165 million Orthodox Christians, met and exchanged the kiss of peace in their first historic encounter.

"We are brothers," Pope Francis said as he embraced Patriarch Kirill. Then the patriarch responded,"Now things are easier," as he and the pope exchanged the kiss of peace. Finally the pope said,"This is the will of God."

For more details on their visit and background information on relations between these two Churches, please read the following:

Donald Trump: The Pros and Cons of the Colourful Republican Presidential Candidate

Donald J. Trump, commonly known as Donald Trump, is one of several U.S. presidential candidates vying for the Republican Party nomination in mid-2016.

In his campaign trails, he was most vociferous, disrespectful of other candidates, rude to some women, and racially biased.  Some called him a bigot, megalomaniac, narcissistic, misogynist, racist, rude, and divider rather than a uniter.

In spite of all these, in the last six months, he bulldozed his way in the campaign and was the frontrunner in the Republican voters' opinion polls.

Yesterday, in the Iowa caucus, Ted Cruz, another co-campaigner of Trump who was trailing behind him in the polls, won the votes, Trump being in the second place. Donald Trump, unexpectedly,  accepted the results gracefully and congratulated Ted Cruz! He also said that he would keep on campaigning.

It would be interesting to see how far Donald Trump can go with is brash, quirky, unpredictable, and vindictive behaviour because whatever he did and said so far during his campaign, would be difficult for a person with common sense to accept and support.
